Living in a foreign language offers ample opportunity to reflect on language in general, and the last two weeks here have been a fabulous demonstration of how reliant we are on speech formulas to dispense with small talk and other necessary business.

Mar 4th 2004 No time!

It is my experience that the ubiquitous declaration “I don”t have time!” is often nothing more than a false way of saying “This does not concern me” or “I don”t want to deal with this.” Another of many devices we have conjured to use language in order to avoid communication.
