I must confess that Pieces of April was not everything I expected and more: a movie full of miscalculations, a spent metaphor, and two-dimensional characters. I may have been hasty, though, in my initial judgment that it offers nothing of value.

Sep 6th 2004 Beauty in the breakdown (spoilers)

Last evening I saw Garden State for a second time. The narrative is not tight, the script more than a little rough around the edges. It is not grandiose, or revelatory, or sexy. It is low-key, and beautifully sweet, and Braff seems to realize that those things are sexier than anything.

Apr 27th 2004 You are my sunshine (minor movie spoilers)

Preliminary thoughts on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kaufman’s newest tour de force featuring spectacular performances by (surprise!) Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Plus, something about a nature experiment gone wrong, resulting in my early death. Sadness ensues.

Feb 11th 2004 Ben Zander, Mahler 9, New England Conservatory

Whatever story this symphony suggests to the listener, the end cannot but put you at peace in the face of turmoil and make you believe that there is hope in spite of our powerlessness. The peace and hope it speaks of are permanent, final, irrational, and ultimately acts of great faith.
