Jul 6th 2005 05:56 pm In Mexico, we speak Spanish

I am tired of people assuming I speak English and definitely definitely not Spanish because of my white skin and vaguely European features. Okay, very European features. Nevertheless, henceforth my response is going to be a blank stare and "Perdón, no hablo inglés." That is, until I can no longer contain the white hot hatred burning inside me and I literally explode in blood and entrails (that’s viscera) and a torrent of Mexican obscenities the likes of which have never been heard from this mouth over the unfortunate object of my displeasure.

In Mexico, we speak Spanish. ¿Entendido?

Over a week ago I wrote that I had a lot of catching up to do here, and that I hoped to put up posts about Mexico City, Oaxaca City, and Puerto Escondido in the near future. I have begun a post re; the former, and have posts about the latter two more or less written in my head, but I must with a heavy heart now add San Cristóbal de las Casas and the jungle paradise of Palenque to the list.

I certainly have enough time to write and post these things&mdash, today, for example, we are doing absolutely nothing—, and as I mentioned, Collin has been great about editing photos for me. I blame my inability to post with any semblance of timeliness on three things. The first, that most of the cheap Internet cafes have the most awful keyboards in the world, and I hate to type on them. This is a terrible excuse, and not nearly as interesting or salacious as the second and third. I am almost ashamed to have written it. The second, that I find myself habitually forgetting how to speak English now that I am traveling with two Mexicans who don’t speak it. I keep thinking posts in Spanish which, while exciting, is not particularly useful.

And the third, well, it turns out I met this girl. The chain of events that led to our actual meeting and traveling together is astonishingly long and full of the type of coincidence you can’t ignore even though you don’t believe in coincidence. The amount that I do not need a long-distance relationship right now, and the amount I feel one gets to choose when and how these things happen, or that I want or can afford to be picky about this situation, are roughly equivalent. That’s all I really have to say about that right now.

Wednesday marks 4 weeks that I’ve been here, and two to go until I head to Kansas. Current plans may or may not include returning to Oaxaca and San Cristóbal en route to Mexico City, so I may delay those posts for a time, having spent only two days in each place. In any case, I will try to be a small bit more conscientious.
